Most marketers with 3 or 4 weeks to go before an event would share a countdown or a deadline. I've been there but I won't. Not today. Today I'm going to tell you about what I did Saturday night.
I was at the grocery store --- kids at camp, spouse on a boys trip, friends all on summer adventures. I could have so easily gone home, put the milk away, and watched TV (once I figured out how to turn it on) for the night. But something reminded me that Aerosmith was in town. A younger me would have purchased tickets months in advance and would have been applying too much eyeliner right now, but I was at the checkout counter buying baby portobello mushrooms.
I searched on my phone to see the dates of the tour and wouldn't you know it --- tonight at the MGM Grand National Harbor! (Yes. I live close to the National Harbor; hence the conference location. I felt like keeping it close would be easier. Not true but that's a story for another day.) I searched up a ticket for one. Hmm --- second row in the adult section (not floor) for $350. Nah --- too much. I got in my car and looked again. Wait! First row, Section 104, Row A, Seat 1 -- $198. Ok -- I'm in. I buy. As I complete the purchase, I feel like a teenager. I am so excited to drop off my milk and mushrooms and go see Steven Tyler! I call my mom. She can only focus on one thing: that I am going by myself.
I'm back in the car thirty minutes later and heading to the show. Doors open at 8PM so I'm thinking the opening act won't start until at least 9:30. I get to my seat at 8:28. It's close but I have always been that girl who tries to get closer so I casually walk away from my seat and up to...the stage. It's 8:32 and the band comes out. No opening act...It's them --- It's HIM. For the next 90 minutes, Steven Tyler stood two feet in front of me.
By 10:00, I was saying goodbye to all of the people around me who liked Steven Tyler just as much as me (acquired taste, I guess). I got to my car and felt --- AWESOME!
People inspire people and when you get inspired, it feels good.
We lose sight of our passions. I'm 43 years old and I don't get excited about much these days; instead I plan for what might go wrong so I can salvage what remains. Wrong --- we should let ourselves live out our passions.
I was with people like me -- people who share similar interests. It didn't matter that I went to the show alone because I was already part of a group --- I just needed to show up.
So friends, that's my message: Show up. Get out of bed in the morning and do something you love. Surround yourself with people who inspire you. Let yourself feel excited. This conference was designed to be your "Steven Tyler" moment so...let it be amazing because when the moment arrives you know you'll be alright.
